Kik Messenger is a mobile-based messaging application that prioritizes simplicity and privacy. Developed in 2009 by a group of university students in Canada, the app officially debuted on October 19, 2010, thanks to Kik Interactive, Inc. Its rapid growth led to more than one million user registrations in just two weeks.
Currently, Kik has more than 300 million registered users, with a significant number being U.S.-based teenagers. The app is only available in English and must be downloaded on a device running iOS 8.1 or Android 4.1 or later.
To start using Kik, all that’s needed is an email and a password. Users create a username which can include emojis and don’t need to provide a phone number. IP addresses are logged to help Kik determine users approximate location, but personal identification is not required.
Once set up, users can add friends and start sending messages, images, videos, drawings, and links. The app is completely free, but users must be at least 13 years old. If needed, account cancellation is simple, and a detailed guide is available to assist with deleting the account and removing the app.
